For candidates: your Scout video interview
The company you applied to has invited you to a video interview, a conversation with an AI interviewer, and sent you a link by email. You can take it whenever suits you before the link closes. A person on the company’s hiring team watches it and decides what happens next.
What you need#
- A laptop or desktop computer with a camera and a microphone. Use Chrome, Edge or Safari.
- A quiet room with light in front of you, not a window behind. Headphones help the interviewer hear you clearly.
- Other apps and tabs closed. Your entire screen is shared for the whole conversation.
- A stable connection. If it drops, you can open the link again.
The invitation page shows roughly how long the conversation takes and the date the link is open until.
What is recorded, and who sees it#
- What’s recorded: your camera, microphone and screen, from the moment you begin the conversation until it ends. Nothing is recorded during setup.
- Who sees it: the hiring team at the company that invited you. AI transcribes and summarises the conversation. A person makes every hiring decision.
- How long it’s kept: the invitation and consent pages tell you how long, after which it is deleted. You can ask for it to be deleted sooner.
Taking the interview#
Open the link from your email and read the page. When you’re ready, click “Begin when you're ready”.
If the company offers more than one language, choose the one you’d like to talk in. You can also choose captions.
Enter the 6-digit code sent to the email you applied with, then click “Confirm”.
- The code works once, for this link only, and expires in 10 minutes.
- Didn’t get it? Check spam. After 30 seconds you can click “Send a new code”.
- After 5 wrong tries the code stops working: ask for a new one.
Read what will be recorded, then tick both boxes: “Record my camera, microphone and screen” and “Let AI run the conversation and summarise it”. Click “I agree, continue”.
Check your setup: your camera, your microphone, that you can hear the interviewer (“Play sound”), and share your entire screen (not a tab or a window).
- If your browser blocked the camera or mic, click the camera icon in the address bar, choose Allow, then try again.
Meet the interviewer and click “Start the conversation”.
ResultThe conversation begins, and so does the recording.
Talk it through. There are no fixed questions: the interviewer follows what you say, and you can ask about the role, the team or the company at any time. Take a moment to think; it waits until you’ve finished.
When it ends, you’ll see “Thank you”. You can rate the experience and leave a comment, then stop sharing your screen and close the tab.
The interviewer is an AI#
Before you start, the consent page tells you plainly that the interviewer is an AI. It runs the conversation; it doesn’t decide whether you get the job. Scout doesn’t make hiring decisions: the company’s hiring team does.
You can say no#
If you’d rather not be recorded, choose not to on the consent page (“Don't record me”). Nothing is recorded, and the company’s recruiter can talk with you about another way to interview.
After the interview, you can click “Ask … to delete my recordings” (with the company’s name) on the last page. The company’s hiring team is told and decides.
If something goes wrong#
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| “Reconnecting…” | Your connection dropped. Wait a moment. Still stuck after a minute? Close the tab and open your link again. |
| “Welcome back” | Everything you said is saved. Run the quick setup check, then click “Continue the conversation”. |
| “It's open somewhere else” | The interview is open in another tab or browser. Close the other one, then refresh. |
| “This link has expired” | The link’s open period has ended. Ask the company for a new one. |
| “This link is no longer active” | The company withdrew this link. Ask them if you think it’s a mistake. |
| “You've already talked with …” | You’ve finished this interview. Each link works once. |
| “This link isn't valid” | Make sure you opened the whole link from your email. |
Who to contact#
For anything about the role, the interview or your application, reply to the email your link came in. It reaches the hiring team at the company that invited you. Ask them there for more time, another language or a different format. Live captions are on by default.
